Carrie Gates and Jon Vaughn make abstract, fantastical artworks from digital and analog visual and audio technologies. Gates constructs complex and intriguing visual projections in realtime that interact with the audio through methods such as sound-responsive animation and no-input analog signal processing within customized VJ software and hardware setups. Vaughn sculpts his sound character from a variety of prepared or modified instruments and objects, field recordings, and dynamic digital processing. Carrie Gates and Jon Vaughn have been collaborating for more then ten years, performing together in a constellation of experimental sound and video projects. Over this time, they have developed an innate sense of each other’s improvisational flow, leading to tightly synchronized performances that are organized by conceptual models such as graphic scores or interpretations of a theme. Performance highlights include send + receive (Winnipeg, MB), Neutral Ground New Music Series (Regina, SK), and the prestigious Vancouver New Music Festival (Vancouver, BC).
